HOW THERAPY WORKS ~ AND HOW TO TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT
What therapy is: Therapy is emotional work that we do together. It is a working collaboration between patient and therapist (you and me) to help you have a better life. We will work together as best we can, to understand: who you are; what happened to you; how you are held back; and how you want to move forward. Therapy is a place to get support to find the clarity and courage to make the changes that you might need to make, in order to have a better life.
What I can do: Listen to your struggles, understand what happened to you, help clarify your problems, help you figure out what it is that you want, help you see how you can do things differently, encourage change.
What you can do: Show up with a willingness to work hard, engage in the process, think about our work between sessions, be brave and willing to do things differently.
Readiness for therapy: A level of readiness is required to undertake therapy with me, as I am unable to do therapy with those who lack basic stability in their lives, or those who are not yet ready to commit to regular sessions. You will need a reliable phone and email account for me to communicate with you, and the capacity to respond in a timely manner. You will need to be able to attend sessions regularly without frequent cancellations or no-shows. Only within a stable frame can we do our best work together.
Change is possible and it takes courage. In our work, I will do my best to help you figure out what changes need to be made, and help you build the courage to make these changes.
